Art

I create dynamic, moving images and animations, pushing my new medium in new directions. My pieces are internally lit boxes that, when you move past them, show a moving image. Typical moving images use one to three seconds of animation or video. For a better picture of my work, you have to see it in person. This video[3M avi] and the flash animation below are the best the web can do for the medium, but they don't compare with the real thing.

I love exploring the medium, discovering things nobody knew before about it and human perception, and creating beautiful images. My work is dynamic, innovative, and visually intriguing.

This flash representation simulates one of my early installations at the Chelsea nightclub, Crobar. Moving the mouse along the box simulates your dynamic view walking past the display. [1.5 Mb]

The medium has grown to be a passion, steadily growing from when I first conceived of it and made the first models with balsa wood, glue, and construction paper. My scientific background helped me discover the parameters and equations that characterize the medium. My entrepreneurial background led me to develop the manufacturing and printing requirements and to write the code to transform raw images into a printable series.

The creative challenges of expressing my ideas of beauty into a medium with almost no precedents are the most interesting and intriguing and full of discovery.

The medium itself has broad appeal. Children laugh and play with it. Scientists figure out how it works. Technologists figure out how to make it. Photographers recall Muybridge and Marey. Historians relate it to zoetropes. Advertisers want to sell things with it. Entrepreneurs develop business models with it. Everybody asks questions about it.

Since December 2003, three of my pieces are on long term display at Chelsea's Crobar. Here is the announcement of Crobar's grand opening. Crobar is on 28th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues.

In August and September 2003 the Soma Gallery in New York City showed six pieces of my work. Here are the invitation and press release.

The biggest displays I designed are publicly viewable for the price of a subway fare in Manhattan, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. The company I founded, Submedia, installed them, with generous cooperation from many parties, particularly the subway systems themselves, PATH, PATCO, and MARTA.

Their content changes monthly by advertiser. National, blue-chip advertisers tend to buy the ads. Buyers include Coca-Cola, Calvin Klein, Cadillac, Target, Infiniti, and Dasani. Most bought more than once.

Following my partnership with Duggal, my display is permanently installed at their 23rd Street store, just off 5th Avenue.

In Miami Beach, see my display in the lobby of The Creek Hotel at 23rd and Collins.

My art debut came Thanksgiving 2002 at Tribeca's nightclub, Arc. The VIP room hosts two displays. They are publicly viewable for the regular price of admission, but you need a VIP pass. Please contact me or Arc in advance for VIP access.

The 2003 Superbowl featured a 90 second Cadillac ad that drew inspiration from my medium. Besides buying Submedia space, they featured in-tunnel advertising in a television ad of an in-tunnel ad.

Please contact me for private viewings.

To see the Submedia display in midtown Manhattan, take a northbound PATH train from 14th Street and 6th Avenue. You will see the display through the windows of the left hand side of the train just after the train leaves the station.

The PATH 14th Street entrance is on 6th Avenue, just south of 14th Street. The staircase is recessed in the building (not the standalone staircase for the MTA). Click here for a map.

Many people like to see the display more than once. To see it again, stay on the train after passing the display. It will go to 33rd Street and reverse direction. Get off at 9th Street, cross the platform and catch another northbound train.
